      Dear all

      I received this earlier today.

So it really is possible... Scary, eh?

      NEWS RELEASE
      >From the office of the South-East England's Green MEP Caroline Lucas

      July 26th, 2005

GM SUPERWEED FOUND AT UK TRIAL SITE
MEP RENEWS CALL FOR GM BAN IN FACE OF NEW EVIDENCE

THE GOVERNMENT faces fresh calls to permanently ban GM crops after a
herbicide-resistant 'superweed' wad discovered growing at the site on one of
the UK's controversial farm-scale GM trials.

The common weed charlock had cross-bred with GM rape growing at the site,
raising fears that GM contamination of neighbouring plants may be much more
      likely than previously thought.

The 'superweed' was described in a report quietly published on a Government
website last week. It is not known at which of the farm-scale trials the
      weed was found.

Green Party Euro-MP Caroline Lucas said the Government must introduce an
immediate ban on growing GM in the UK.

"If unpredictable transfer of genetic material from GM crops to neighbouring
species takes place, as it would appear from this latest study, it will be
impossible for farmers to guarantee that their own products are GM-free,"
      said Dr Lucas.

"The commercial growing of GM crops will spell an end to organic and
conventional farming - and the British countryside as we know it - and the
Government must declare a permanent ban accordingly."

But Dr Lucas, who is a member of the European Parliament's influential
Environment Committee, admitted that a UK ban was 'unlikely'. Just last
month, the UK was arguing for Brussels to prohibit any EU member state
      banning any particular GM product.

The South-East England Euro-MP added: "Like the 'GM nation' consultation,
which, though flawed, presented a resounding testimony to widespread public
opposition to GM, and the earlier finding that the farm-scale trials had
harmed wildlife, this latest research has provided strong evidence to
support a permanent ban on the growth of GM crops in the UK."

"The Government's support for GM, which runs counter to mounting scientific
evidence and the clearly stated wishes of most people, is becoming
      increasingly untenable."
