the real issue, is just how desirable are the effects? Drugs get criminalized
because of observed and reported patterns of behavior and thinking that
are deranged and often regretted later, and negatively impact relationships,
productivity, judgement, safety, long term and short term health, etc. etc.
Including a tendency, or lack thereof, to get obsessed by them, with or
without the classic tolerance-withdrawal patterns.
Entheogens were NEVER "recreational."
They were taken dead seriously. Whether or not that is a good thing,
the recreational use is as contrary to the traditions they come from as
they are undesirable from the perspective of modern societies with
serious fine margin issues like machine handling and car control reaction
times, etc. etc.
