CAFT e-mail action alert 1 June, 2005
Selfridges end fur sales!
During the recent Week of Action against Selfridges' sale of real fur,
CAFT entered negotiations with the company to discuss a possible end to
their fur sales. We are pleased to announce that following a meeting of
their Board they finally issued a policy statement saying that,
effective immediately, Selfridges has stopped selling all real fur -
including rabbit - and that they will not sell it again.
As Selfridges is a very influential name in the world of fashion this is
a major success. In their statement Selfridges said that a lack of
customer demand for fur was one reason they have stopped selling it. The
fur trade may continue to claim that 'fur is back', but with major
companies like Selfridges, Zara and Harvey Nichols ending fur sales
after campaigns co-ordinated by CAFT it hardly seems that many people
really want to buy fur!
We would again like to send a massive thanks to all CAFT supporters who
helped with this campaign, whether it was in e-mailing or phoning
Selfridges to complain or in actively supporting protests outside
Selfridges stores. Animal rights groups in London, Birmingham and
Manchester ensured through regular protest that this campaign reached
Some of you will have seen this great news reported in some national
newspapers, but unfortunately, despite CAFT putting out a press release
and even speaking to reporters directly, some press attributed the
success to other organisations! While this is a shame, the important
thing is that yet another company have stopped selling fur.
We are continuing to identify which shops sell real fur and later this
year will be identifying companies that we intend to launch co-ordinated
campaigns against. In the meantime, below is a list of shops selling
real fur - please take a moment to contact them, pointing out the
horrors of the fur trade and asking them to stop selling fur.
This company have been selling scarves with ‘balls’ made from rabbit
fur, as well as rabbit fur handbags. A CAFT supporter saw them in
Atlantic’s Hammersmith store.
Please contact Atlantic, asking them not to sell real fur:

Joseph is one of London's big fur traders
Following Selfridges decision to withdraw fur, London activists are
holding regular protests against fashion chain Joseph. As you can see
from the list below this Joseph has many outlets in London. They sell
real fur in most of their stores, or at least they did over the
Autumn/Winter season. Joseph is a London based company which is starting
to expand worldwide, they now have outlets now in France, the USA and
Although each Joseph branch only sells a small amount of fur, taken
together this makes them a major player in the fur trade. There have
been numerous protests over recent years at many of their London
Ironically Joseph is one of the many fashion companies who have just
been told by Selfridges to remove fur from their concessions in
Selfridges stores. They were also told the same by Harvey Nichols and
Fenwicks when these shops went fur free, so Joseph is well aware that
fur is unacceptable.
Please contact them and ask them to give us a clear fur-free policy
covering all of their shops and including rabbit fur. They can write to

Liberty of Regent St still selling fur
London campaigners have held several protests recently at Liberty of
Regent St who continued to sell fur throughout the winter. We wrote to
them to ask about their policy, and received the usual nonsense about
rabbit fur being a by-product of the meat industry. Please politely
contact Liberty and ask them to take out a clear fur-free policy,
including rabbit fur.
Tell them you won't shop there until they do and that you will encourage
others to do the same.
