I think you mean that '.' refers to the current
directory and '..' refers to its parent directory.
When you're working form the command line, they make
for convenient shorthand.
For example, I can change director to a grand
That's especially nice in a batch file when you
need to move to a relative directory. You'd have
more experience with '.' and '..' if you played
more with the Command Prompt or if you were old.
BTW, the *nix people are laughing at us.
