Shovell, Sir Cloudesley (1650, 1707), naval officer, baptized on 25 November 1650 at Cockthorpe, on the north Norfolk coast, was the son of John Shovell (1625-1654), from a Norwich family of property and distinction, and Anne (bap. 1628, d. 1709), daughter of Henry Jenkinson of Cley. His unusual forename derives from the family name of his maternal grandmother, Lucy Cloudesley (1608-1627), and his uncle Cloudesley Jenkinson (1639-1696). Cloudesley Shovell's father died when he was about four and his mother married John Flaxman (d. 1687) in 1659.
