She was the fourth child and second daughter of James, duke of York (1633-1701), subsequently king of England, Scotland, and Ireland, and his first wife, Anne, duchess of York (1637-1671), daughter of Edward Hyde, first earl of Clarendon. Of the eight children born to this marriage only Lady Anne and her elder sister, Lady Mary [see Mary II], survived to adulthood. ...

        unremarked at the time.)
