Lennox, Charles, first duke of Richmond, first duke of Lennox, and
duke of Aubigny in the French nobility (1672-1723), landowner,
natural son of Charles II (1630-1685) and Louise Renee de Penancoet
de Keroualle, duchess of Portsmouth (1649-1734), was born in London
on 29 July 1672. On 9 August 1675 he was created baron of Settrington,
Yorkshire, earl of March, and duke of Richmond, Yorkshire, in the
peerage of England, and on 9 September 1675 Baron Methuen of
Tarbolton, earl of Darnley, and duke of Lennox in the peerage of
Scotland. The two dukedoms had reverted to Charles II as nearest male
heir of Charles Stuart, duke of Richmond and Lennox (1640-1672), who
had died without issue. Louis XIV also gave him the dignity of duke of
Aubigny in remainder to his mother.
