Press Release: Failed Leadership; Failed Government
BEDFORD, PA; October 25– On Friday, in response to the recent GOP surrender during the government shutdown, Art Halvorson released the following statement:
"On Wednesday, our representatives in Washington agreed that the best solution for our nation’s problems is to push them off for another time. Our nation is in crisis. Our debt has grown out of control since Obama took office. Entitlement programs like Medicare and Medicaid are failing. Instead of fixing them, the Democrats added the already embarrassingly impractical Obamacare program. Add in increasing regulations, higher taxes, and anti-growth policies, and the problem keeps getting worse.
"It has become increasingly clear that we don’t have the right conservative leaders in Washington to fix the problem.
"In this latest budget debate, our representatives made a big show of their attempt to defund Obamacare, which I supported. But when the polls got tough, they surrendered unilaterally, and voted to reopen the government and allow more debt. While they were at it, they voted for a few new pork barrel projects, including several billion dollars in new transportation spending for Mitch McConnell in Kentucky – an unofficial earmark Mr. Shuster did not oppose.
"In recent comments, Mr. Shuster has claimed victory, by voting to 'extend the conversation' with Democrats about a new budget. While Bill Shuster may believe that more conversations count as victories, I don’t. He’s been having conversations with Democrats in Washington for 13 years, while our problems have only gotten worse.
"I believe we need to reevaluate the leadership we have in Washington. America needs representatives that are going to push for a solution - not just kick the can down the road again and call it 'bipartisanship.' True leaders negotiate towards a better path. It is unfortunate the current group we have refuses to take that stance on problems."
