A doctor on the news tonight was saying that a small hole in the heart
is often repaired these days by sending instruments up through the
arteries, into the heart, like a cardiac catheter. That is to say, not
open heart surgery. Certainly less traumatic, and short recovery time.
Of course, they were speculating on the nature of the hole, but it was
      interesting.
They were saying that a hole between the chambers of the heart could
allow a small clot to form and travel to the brain. If this is the
cause (a big if), and it is relatively simple to correct, this may be
very good news for his full recovery.
