Throw A Dart At The Wall
- Yeah, put up a wheel with the names of all of the players rated in the
top 40 or so of this draft class, spin it, and throw a dart at it. At
this point in time, you will have as good a chance as anybody of
naming the Patriots' pick in Round 1 of this year's draft. Well, that
is if they even make a Round 1 selection.
Check out this "Draft Tracker" from Patriots.com. They list the
predictions of 19 published "draft experts". Those 19 guys name no
less than 13 different players as the Patriots' first pick. And, as we
all know, Belichick often trades down to get an extra pick, if he's
not really sold on the potential of any player available way down
where the team picks.
Of course, things may appear to clear up a bit as we get nearer to
April 25th. There could be an addition or two from the Free Agent
market that will appear to change the team's priorities; or possibly
even a trade that would do so. But, regardless of any rumors we may
hear, nobody knows what's in BB's mind. Regardless of the evaluations
presented by the guys on ESPN, NFL Network, or elsewhere in the media,
only Bill Belichick knows his assessment of a particular player's
skills and attitude; and how those will fit into the overall offensive
and defensive strategies he has in mind for the upcoming season.
So my personal plan is to simply watch for the actual results of our
team's off season personnel moves. Trying to predict it is a waste of
