This thought has crossed my mind too. It looks like we have two good
starting QBs, and we can't trade Cassel because his contract expires, but we can
trade Brady. As things stand now, I would not do it. I'm thrilled at what Cassel
has done for us this year, but I think the best long term bet is to keep Brady
and groom Kevin O'Connell to eventually replace him a few years down the road.
So, while the team has the responsibility to think about this, it's not
something they should go through with unless they get some incredible offer AND
they're sure they can resign Cassel. Of course, IF Cassel leads this team to a
Super Bowl win, then you explore this idea more seriously. I still don't know
that you do it even though I think Cassel has a great future. I do know that I
am a Matt Cassel fan, and that as long as he doesn't end up with Jets, I'll
cheer for him as long as his success doesn't come at the Patriots' expense. If
his team plays the Pats, I want the Pats to win. If his team needs to lose so
the Pats can make the playoffs, I'll hope his team loses. All the same, I'll
personally wish him the best. And if he does end up with the Jets . . . I'll
still view him as a respected opponent.
If I was Matt Cassel, I'd be completely focused on the Steelers, and
not all this stuff we fans like to talk about. At the end of the year, I'd be
really selective about the team I want to sign with. I'd look for my best chance
to be a long term success rather than who offers the most money. Take a giant
deal from a team that's going nowhere and will put all the blame on me, and
yeah, I'll have one big payday, but my career will be over within a year or two.
So, I think I'd go to a team like the Minnesota Vikings even if I'd have to
learn a new system and even if it didn't offer the biggest deal. Why? A team
like the Vikings has just about everything it needs to be an elite team.
Everything EXCEPT a good QB. So a team like the Vikings gives me the best chance
to succeed, to win games and maybe championships. Whereas if I stumble with a
lesser team that goes 2-14, I'll be dismissed as a flash in the pan, and
cut loose. If I want to stay in the same system, maybe I'd look at a team that
hires Josh McDaniels as a head coach, IF he signs with a team like the Vikings
that has a great chance to win and just needs a QB.
