***** The Colts - Saints game has begun, and IS being broadcast here in
Thailand. That's a bigger deal for me than is initially evident. The monthly
schedule magazine I receive from my Thai satellite provider (UBC) showed
ONLY the 2 games per week scheduled to be shown here - the 2 Sunday
afternoon games. The prime time games were shown on ESPN-Asia last year.
This year, we learned, ESPN-Asia has dropped the NFL!
***** It didn't dawn on me until last night that there is an obvious reason
for that decision by ESPN-Asia. It is the only ESPN affiliate anywhere in
the world that is not carrying the NFL. Well, guess where their headquarters
is located? It's in Hong Kong. I'm betting a month's pension check that this
decision is purely retaliation against the NFL (and our Patriots) for
canceling the scheduled game in Beijing. Remember that the game had been
publicly announced. It was canceled because there were too many logistical
problems with Beijing's planning. (Why am I not surprised?!) China LOST
FACE! They do NOT take that without striking back. This is an intentional
slap at the NFL for canceling the Pats trip to Beijing.
***** What happened here was that the Thai satellite operator, UBC, was
flooded with calls and emails from American NFL fans. (Yes, that group
definitely included me!) To our amazement, they reacted. They have
apparently made separate licensing agreements, and will now broadcast those
prime time, former ESPN games on their home sports channels, of which they
have several. Needless to say, I, and other NFL fans in Thailand, am very
happy about this. I'll be sending them a note of profuse thanks for their
understanding and efforts on our behalf.
***** I had already seen the good news that the Pats opener on Sunday is
scheduled as one of the two games for this weekend. Now I know that I'll be
seeing all of the Pats prime time games also. (The Sunday games are all
"iffy". We get the networks' national games from their Sunday schedule each
***** Well, the Saints just missed a 52-yard FG, damn it! Game is still
scoreless, and I'm going to get back to it. Looks great on my new 46" LCD!
