Re: [palmx] MTB - apa cerita?
- A synopsis of the events yesterday;
About 10 of us turn up yesterday at the Elmina Palm Oil Estate. Among them were Dato' Samsudin (?main organiser), Ungku Mahera
(not sure of spelling), Azlina, Jan, Ai Mee, Rose, myself & 2 chinese girls. There may be another person, who is of similar
built like Jan but dressed in blue jersey instead of yellow.
We started just before 9 am, after all has put their bikes together and made the necessary adjustments. It started well enough.
Initially we were sort of separated into 2 groups with Mahera, Azlina Rose, Ai Mee, Rose & myself in the first group and were
ahead of the others. The other group consists of Dato' Samsudin, the 2 beginners & Jan + the girl in blue.
After 2 km, while going downhill, one of the participant lost control of her bike and hurt herself. Since the wound was quite
bad, I volunteered to get my car and bring her out for medical treatment. I brought her to Damansara Specialist Hospital and
left after her relatives turns up. So I cycled only 4 km yesterday :-)
However I learnt a lot yesterday especially from Dato' Samsudin who is very much the "gadget man". Nazley sure suka jumpa dia.
He has gadgets on him which will allow him to repair a bike in the middle of jungle (I must get that kit!), also a "Swiss
knife"-like gadget that makes assembling bikes a synch. Amongst other items in his gadget bag is a spare bike tube & a compact
bike pump. He is also a very patient man, very accomodating to the beginners.
Azlina also a bike pump in her bag. She filled her water bottle with diluted 100-plus. She showed me a bike whose front absorber
cost RM1200 (macam rega absorber kereta!) and brakes at RM800. Oh boy, I better rethink my desire of taking up cycling as a new
hobby. Handera 330 pun tak mahal macam ni.
Ungku Mahera (must be a famous person since my wife was spouting out her biodata the minute I told her that name), was dressed
for the occasion in blue jersey & black full-length bike pants with matching bike helmet. The pants caught my interest since it
is very well designed with appropriate paddings and protection to protect the wearer. Should be made a standard item for MTB
since safety is important in such outings. She also wore a special water bottle which is worn over the shoulder, with a spout
going to the mouth. She filled the bottle with plain water. Her bike is a green one, in monocoque (don't try to pronounce this,
I ended up getting a lot of funny stares yesterday :-p) design. The price of the bike is RM14,000. Compare this to my bike yang
rega cuma RM360.
Jan & the other person was also dressed in yellow/blue jersey with full-length bike pants. However I didn't notice any
paddings/protection. Being the only other guy besides Dato' Samsudin, I dare not look too hard :-)
Rose was the only one amongst us bright enough to bring "Handyplast" to help stop the bleeding. Embarassing since I, the doctor
didn't even bring any first aid kit. Next time I must have the first aid kit, complete with pain killers (i/m Nubain cukup?),
alcohol swabs etc. If I'm crazy enough, I might even add some sutures, lignocaine and sterile sccisors (takkan nak buat dressing
tengah hutan kot!). Yalah, a bottle of normal saline would add half a kilo to the bag. Susahle nak bawak segalanya dalam hutan.
Till the next time then.

That place is so near KSH, just across the LDP Highway. Could've gone there that
day. Tak pelah, next time perhaps. Maybe by then they have the Topeak MacGuyver
