PESHAWAR: Da Sahuleekunkio Maraka Pekhawar arranged a day-long seminar to mark the 1st death anniversary of Qalandar Momand at Peshawar Club here on Sunday.
Veteran politician and nationalist leader Ajmal Khattak was the chief guest while Saifur Rahman Salim presided over the function.
Qalandar Momand was born in 1930 at village Bazidkhel.
Speaking on the occasion Ajmal Khattak said, "Qalandar Momand was a great visionary and revolutionary of his own kind. He suffered many hardships for the political and social emancipation of Pakhtuns. He not only set new trends in Pashto literature but also brought about a significant change in the political vision of Pakhtuns. It is the utmost responsibility of Pakhtun intellectuals to understand his message and act upon it accordingly. Being a versatile genius, Qalandar Momand exercised a deep influence on almost two generations of our poets, writers and our political course. He groomed up a host of researchers, budding poets and writers. His conscious efforts for the promotion of Pashto language and literature will be long remembered."
Saifur Rahman Salim, a close companion of Qalandar Momand said that Qalandar was a great benefactor of Pakhtuns. He would never comprise on principles.
"He would always stand for truth and righteousness. He was a man of many qualities. His literary contributions to Pashto literature would be appreciated and respected" added Salim.
Dr Raj Wali Shah Khattak while eulogising the services of the poet said, "Qalandar was the name of an epoch, a school of thought and an institution. These qualities had made him distinguished from his other contemporaries. He was unique among the galaxy of Pakhtun poets and writers due to his vibrant style and modern approach. Qalandar was responsible for introducing new trends of progressivism in Pashto literature."
Dr Israr, in his imaginary letter to Qalandar Momand, recalled his long associations spread over 46 years with him. He said, "It was way back in 1956 when I visited your room in Islamia College Peshawar hostel (Qayyum Manzal) that you delivered a long lecture against the 'One Unit Plan' of Ayub Khan and the students immediately followed your arguments and took out the first ever student protest procession from the college and a day came when the rulers subdued to your way of thinking and the plan was withdrawn. It is still fresh in my memories that you also launched a literary organisation in the University under the name 'Zalmey Leekwal' including Abdur Rahim Majzoob and many other young students. Then you introduced me to the stalwarts of Pashto literature in Olasi Adabi Jirga. Such were your blessings that you showered on me."
Dr Yar Mohammad Maghmoom in his paper said that Qalandar Momand gave a new dimension to Pashto poetry. He discovered the classical literature of Pashto in its true colours and paved the way for the researchers and critics to further dig out the hidden aspects of our literary giants.
Dr Salahuddin, the family doctor of Qalandar, also threw light on the personal traits of the poet. Haji Ghulam Ahmed Bilour in his brief remarks said that Qalandar Momand in fact wanted to arouse the sleeping conscious of Pakhtuns to fight for their rights and lost identity. He lived many a life as poet, writer, linguist, researcher, critic, historian, teacher, politician, and lawyer to the entire satisfaction of each one of them.
"Qalandar Momand helped in the preparation of the constitution and manifesto of ANP. I drew great inspiration from his farsightedness and mature political thinking," he added.
Nisar Mazloom, a former producer of radio Pakistan, had sent in his paper on Qalandar Momand that was read by Humayun Mariamzai in which he had dwelt upon his long association with him. Mushtaq Majrooh, the secretary general of 'Da Sahuleekunkio Maraka Pekhawar'a literary organisation founded by Qalandar Momand in 1962, said that the members of the Maraka would continue to spread the message of the poet, for this purpose he informed that he had established a research cell which would carry out substantial research work on the life and creative works of Qalandar Momand.
Wadood Ashnaghri, Mohammad Zubair Hassrat, Jamshed Momand, Noorul Bashir Naveed, Hasrat Zubair Zubair and Shamsul Qamar Andesh presented their poetic tributes to Qalandar Momand.
Qalandar Momand died on February 4, 2003.
Zalan Momand announced that the second collection containing the remaining portion of Qalandar Momand's poetry titled 'Ranayee' had been published posthumously.
Two CDs and an audiocassette having the poetry sung by popular singers of Pashto of Qalandar Momand in addition to his books were also displayed outside the press club.
The website qalandarmoomand.com was launched on Sunday for the lovers of Pashto literature. Sons of Qalandar Momand Zalan Moomand, Jalawan Momand, poets, writers, intellectuals and fans of the late poet attended the seminar.
