- Aug 15A week or 2 back, my "other half" asked me what I made of the concept of Eternal Recurrence. She has read Twilight of the Idols and knows something of N's ideas, and was finding ER a weirdly intriguing concept. She was tending to view it as a physical, objective thing, a series of Big Bangs creating new universes where every single thing goes exactly as in the previous universes. I don't think N really subscribed to such a notion, certainly as he first mentions it in print - Section 341 of The Gay Science - where he's concerned with how we might react to being told (by some demon) that, for sure, ER is reality; could we live our lives such a way that we'd rejoice at the prospect of an exact repetition of it ad inf. In my view that's the only value of ER, and I don't credit it with any physical actuality whatsoever. I'd be very interested to hear what others make of it.
