CHILDREN SAY THEY WERE ATTACKED BECAUSE THEY GO TO CHURCH

      Statement of the Worried Parents
CHILDREN SAY THEY WERE ATTACKED BECAUSE THEY GO TO CHURCH
      March 27th, 2001
Last week within only a few days two boys were attacked by their schoolmates in the front yard of Cetinje's "Petar II Petrovic Njegos" elementary school.

A.T. boy from the 7th grade attacked his schoolmate Milos Adzic with a pen-knife when their teacher was not present in the classroom. Luckily other pupils managed to prevent the worse. This was not the first time that little Milos was harassed and attacked. Only few weeks ago several schoolmates attacked Milos during a school-organized walk through Cetinje because he asked a blessing from an orthodox priest in front of Cetinje monastery!

The other boy, who is in the 5th grade, Krsto Stanisic, a son of a local orthodox parish priest Dragan Stanisic was attacked in the school front yard during the break between classes. There were about ten boys, most of them from the 7th and 8th grade, and they kept knocking and hitting little Krsto in the head with wooden bars while none of other boys present dared interrupt the ugly scene. They were using swearwords and shouting insults at Krsto "since he is a Serb and an orthodox Christian."

Headmistress of the "Njegos" elementary school Mrs. Maja Mrvaljevic issued informal warnings to only two boys who took part in the incident "because Krsto didn't know the names of the other attackers."

Milos Adzic is not attending the classes at the moment out of fear that nothing will change. Other orthodox Christian children who regularly attend the church are also daily being subjected to verbal abuse and threats because of their religious and ethnic background. At the same time none of these children ever provoked anyone or caused an incident at school or outside the school. Parents of little Krsto are forced to escort him to school and back and now even have to stay with him to protect him during the breaks between classes. Officials at the school do not seem to think that they should take up this matter more seriously.

Parents of the boys who were attacked, together with the parents of other children who are being constantly harassed, have therefore decided to refer this matter to UNICEF and international organizations for the protection of human rights hoping that these institutions will help them in trying to protect their children.

      A group of worried parents,
