There has been some comment recently on some of the lists about a spy George
Trofimoff who took instructions from a Metropolitan Irinej of the Moscow
Patriarchate in Vienna and Germany. This is not altogether a revelation.

Firstly, it should be understood that in the 1970's the position of the MP
in West Germany was blatantly political. Bishops from the Soviet Union were
appointed who had no flocks with the aim of prising historical churches away
from the ROCA and also for purposes of general infiltration. This contrased
with the situation in England where the partriarchal bishop, Anthony Bloom,
was from an emigre family had had some credibility as a sincere religious
leader, abeit one with whom we had serious disagreements. It seems
Metropolitan Ireinej is left over from those times. His picture appears in
recent annual calendars published by the MP which show pictures of all their
bishops. He is an elderly man with a wispy beard in the white headgear of a
Metropolitan, described as the Metropolitan of Vienna.

Recently in a Russian publication there was a reprint of an interview with
our (ROCA) Archbishop Mark of Germany given a few years ago when he still
had hopes of dialogue with the MP. It is an extensive interview and deals in
depth with various issues. In it in passing he mentions quite scathingly a
certain elderly metropolitan living not far from Munich and says the MP
should at least have the decency to retire him or defrock him, since he was
not a real bishop or even a real believer. A footnote says the reference is
to Metropolitan Irinej. I quote from memory and this may not be exact, but
the sense was quite clear. Apparently now he is deceased, having passed away
in 1999. At the time of the interview it seems Vladika Mark had hopes that
the new generation of MP hierarchs were of a different calibre, however
shortly thereafter the MP Bishop Theofane began attempting to seize
historical churches by way of lawsuits.

This is an attempt to give a little background to the news reports which
      have startled many people.
