>27 April 2000
>FROM: AMERICANS TO KEEP ELIÁN FREE
>TO: CONCERNED AMERICAN CITIZENS
>SUBJECT: NATIONWIDE PROTESTS TO KEEP ELIÁN FREE
>Plans for a series of peaceful, nationwide demonstrations against the
>siege on Elián and supporting his freedom are now underway.
>The demonstrations are planned for the eve of the case for Eliáns asylum
>before the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, Georgia. This day
>also happens to be Mothers Day in Latin America, when the demonstrations
>may be an appropriate symbolic reminder that Eliáns mother, who died
>trying to reach America, wanted Elián to be free.
>The protests will take place at 10 A.M., your time, WEDNESDAY, 10 MAY 2000
>(the day before the hearing for Eliáns asylum in Atlanta) at THE FEDERAL
>BUILDING in each American city listed below.
>At each protest we will fly American flags, sing the American National
>Anthem and other great songs for liberty, and have a noted speaker give a
>talk on why Elián should remain free in America.
>This is a grass-roots field operation; we will need money, gifts, office
>supplies, American flags, city maps, assistance with permits, police
>cooperation, field coordination, use of cell phones, use of pagers, media
>coordination, e-mail correspondents, water, food, first aid,
>walkie-talkies or radios, security, phone callers, letter writers, people
>to promote the event on the internet, and in the real world, and much,
>Mark Da Cunha creator of the Keep Elián Free website is the national
>coordinator. Americans To Keep Elián Free will have local coordinators in
>each city where a protest will be held.

>We will be announcing more cities, and coordinators on the Keep Elián Free
>web site in the next few days.
>Please let me know how you can help. If you are interested in
>participating, please write to the LOCAL organizer at the e-mail address
>above (or to me) without a moment's delay.
>Contrary to what you will hear in the pro-Castro members of the press the
>cause for Eliáns inalienable right to be free is growing. My Keep Elián
>Free petition Web site has logged in over 10,000 signatures, up from 4,000
>before the raid on Eliáns home!
>When history is written, let those who have signed this petition to keep
>Elián free be among those who opposed tyranny and stood proudly for
>freedom. There is no cause nobler than defending the smallest, and most
>persecuted, minority that exists--the individual.
>It is in the name of this struggle that I am calling for an outcry for
>Eliáns liberty. Even if young Elián is returned to the island prison of
>Cuba, let him see that Americans stood against evil in this unholy war
>against the Eliáns individual rights.
>It is the not only the MORAL thing to do--it is the AMERICAN thing to do.
>Thank you for your interest, and I look forward to hearing from you.
>Mark Da Cunha
