- STANDOFF IN JERICHO--UPDATE, FEB. 11th
Also on-line at http://www.orthodox.net/jericho/2000-02-11-update.html
A temporary verbal arrangement has been reached in Jericho in which a
trailer with running water and electricity will be set up for the nuns
on the portion of the property being set aside for ROCOR. This
agreement is only to alleviate the harsh conditions suffered by our
nuns and in no way represents a resolution to the overall injustice of
illegal and arbitrary seizure of ROCOR property.
It must be stressed that not a single written document has been
presented thus far--no eviction notice, no written claim from the
Moscow church or the Russian Federation, no written order from the
Palestinians regarding the seizure. This means that anything
"achieved" bears only a temporary and unconfirmed character.
The present agreement also does not resolve the issue of religious
persecution, for ROCOR still has no
access to its own chapel. Additionally, the violation of human rights
still exists, in that the nuns, should
they leave, have no assurances that they, or anyone from ROCOR, will be
able to return, which means that de facto, our nuns are prisoners on
their own property.
A delegation headed by Archbishop Laurus of ROCOR visited with
Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Congressman Tom Lantos, Congressman
Sherwood Boehlert, as well as the offices of Senator Daniel Patrick
Moynihan, Senator Jesse Helms, Senator Paul Sarbanes and Senator Joseph
Biden and PLO representative Hassan Abdel Rahman and the State
Department. There is a great deal of concern over the situation, and
Congress is preparing to take action to ensure the safety and
well-being of Sisters Maria and Xenia, and to call for justice in the
illegal seizures of ROCOR properties in the Holy Land.
It is crucial that citizens of the U.S. continue to pursue this matter
with their representatives, and that everyone bring these injustices
to the attention of the media and with the international community in
