      Dear List,

Below are interesting comments, which show how unexpectedly some
observers understand the rapprochement with the MP. Did we not
overlook an important stakeholder in this game? Are we ready to
      withstand him?

In Lafontaine's fable "The Cat, the Weasel, and the Young Rabbit",
the cat not only eats both litigants, but he also takes the house
      they fought over.

"The ROCOR itself cannot stand for its interests. But kind people
will help. Perhaps, you do not perceive ROCOR as being anything
important, but here is a place under it which is very advantageous.
To help ROCOR now is like buying a piece of land with falling down
wooden structures, and building on that spot a modern, high quality
      apartment building".

But where is the Faith in this venture?

      In God,

      Vladimir Kozyreff

"...A most delicate questions which is being discussed now, is the
future status of the ROCOR bishops in relation to the MP Synod and,
in particular, the future status of the Head of ROCOR(L) in the
structure of this Synod. No formal decision has been taken as to
whether he will have a status at all.

It would however be very strange, if he would not. For the Head of
ROCOR, however, his becoming part of the MP synod can happen in
different ways. The process by which the Head of the ROCOR will be
chosen and established in the future MP Foreign Metropolitan
district will be decisive. To what extent will the ROCOR hierarchy
influence the process and to what extent will the MP synod exert its
      influence?

Considering the weakness and, frankly speaking, the awkwardness of
the ROCOR delegation at the present negotiations, one can predict
for sure that it will not be able to defend its interests. Moreover,
knowing the working methods of the MP Synod and those of the
Department of external church communications (ÎVTsS) headed by
metropolitan Kyrill (Gundyayev), it is easy to guess where the
      exercise is heading to.

The exercise has a view to insure that the administration of the
future ROCOR metropolitan district is appointed from Moscow and
placed under the scrutiny of the Department of external Church
communications up to the smallest details. That is what will happen
if things are allowed to follow their course.

It is unlikely however that this would satisfy the interests of the
Russian State. Certainly, a real independence for the ROCOR is not
in its interests. An extension of the independence of metropolitan
Cyril's (Gundyayev) departments at ROCOR's expense would however be
      even less satisfactory.

Certainly, the controllability of ROCOR from Moscow is necessary,
but there should not be - even in Moscow – a situation in which such
levers of management would be in hands that would be foreign to the
aministration, or that would be an alternative to " the center of
      authority ...

The ROCOR itself cannot stand for its interests. But kind people
will help. Perhaps, you do not perceive ROCOR as being anything
important, but here is a place under it which is very advantageous.
To help ROCOR now is like buying a piece of land with falling down
wooden constructions and building in their place a modern, high
      quality apartment building".

Comment of the DAY: Let us not overlook this. What are the interests
of the Russian state at the present stage of the union process
between the MP and the ROCOR (L)?
