      Does expanded mena expand the node to the next level but not any sub-nodes? And does this work with nested nodes. I m assuming the answer to both is yes ? -

          Yes, otherwise order wouldn't matter. To simply Daniel's example, if
          the expansionState is 1,3 then you'd have:

          - foo (#1)
          + bar
          - baz (#3)
          + quux
          + fred
          + xyzzy (not #3)
