Robert, it's still worth a try, especially in using a mode which
provides an excellent performance for weak signals.

The digimode below 1840 in Europe must have a bandwidth of 500 Hz
max, above 1840 it's possible to use up to 2700 Hz bandwidth.

I would like to mention again that in Germany the bandplan is not
voluntary but it's required by our licensing authority that we have
our transmission in exact compliance with the existing bandplan. The
good thing is that the DARC (the German Amateur Radio Club) has
achieved that the bandwidth in the different segments has been
specified as main criteria followed by preferred modes and
acitivities, and there is a lot of room for experimental modes.

As I am not a member of the corresponding IARU committee I don't know
why it's so difficult to agree on a common bandplan for the whole
world with exceptions for military or commercial usage in some
countries where necessary. We are still following the old historic
routes and suffer from the attitudes of many hams which believe to
have some ownership of certain band segments, but I haven't given up
my hope yet that this situation might change when times go by.

      73

      Juergen, DL8LE

(licensed since 1964, still liking and operating CW very often  and
having more than 300 countries confirmed in CW)

what constitutes Digital, I can't see a reason for you not to operate
below 1810, or any need for Split.
