[Note how a Health Dept official says he thinks the black boys are being
deliberately killed by Traditional healers! 7 boys are dead so far. The
ineptitude of these Traditional "surgeons" alias - Witch doctors - is
clearly apparent. Perhaps... there is malice too. Jan]

An Eastern Cape health department official has accused what he says are
"so-called" traditional surgeons of having no respect for human life,
after another would-be initiate died from a botched circumcision.

"The way I interpret the whole thing, these boys are being killed
deliberately," department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said on Friday.

"These so-called traditional surgeons have no respect for human life. I
would like these people to be charged with culpable homicide.

"They are being killed in the name of custom, but it's no longer custom
as I see it. You can't be proud of something that kills."

'They are being killed in the name of custom'
The youth's death, at St Barnabas Hospital in the Eastern Cape town of
Libode on Thursday night, brings the winter circumcision season fatality
toll in the province to seven.

Kupelo, who for several weeks now has been accompanying department and
police teams on raids to break up illegal circumcision schools, said the
youth, who had been attending an illegal school, was admitted to the
      hospital on Wednesday.

The boy had a gangrenous penis and had also been assaulted.

Kupelo said another boy, admitted to the same hospital on Thursday night
with gangrene, was in what doctors described as a "critical" condition.

A third youth admitted on Sunday also had gangrene, and doctors intended
to amputate his penis. A large stretch of skin on his penis, and not
merely the foreskin, had been removed by the person who carried out the
      "circumcision", he said.

A fourth boy had been admitted to hospital after botching an attempt to
circumcise himself. Doctors were waiting for the wound to heal before
finishing off the job for him.

The four youths were all between 14 and 17 years - under the minimum 18
required by the province's circumcision law.

The law requires that initiation schools as well as the traditional
surgeons and nurses that run them should be registered with the
      department.

Several unregistered surgeons and nurses have been arrested over the past
few weeks, and the police and department teams have broken up a number of
      illegal schools. - Sapa
