      What about Bob Hope?

Considered a king of (monologue) one-liners, his radio show ran from the
late 1930's through the mid-1950's, and hosted guests from stage and
screen; entertaining us with short sitcom sketches with his guest stars
and music from big band and wonderful singers of the day.

I would categorize his shows as variety-comedy. Just a thought...

      Big Bob Hope fan,
