The Freedom School is being honored by the U.N!

We are wrapping up a very positive summer program, and you are all invited to our Graduation + Community Dinner next Thursday evening.

We're busy at work planning our fall after-school programming and the community mural project is coming along!

Brooklyn Freedom School Receives U.N. Award

The Paul Robeson Freedom School, a community-controlled independent school founded by two members of the Occupy movement in Brooklyn - including yours truly! - will be honored by the United Nations for their ‘Humanitarian and Peacebuilding Work”. The award is being presented by UN Representative Jane Kearns of the Association for Trauma Outreach and Prevention (ATOP).

The school began as a response to the city’s closure of Paul Robeson High School, which DOE officials claimed was “persistently low-achieving”. Students, staff, and community leaders joined together in a community visioning session to construct the new program, now in its 2nd year and housed in the Church of St. Luke & St. Matthew in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, former headquarters of the ‘Occupy Sandy’ hurricane relief effort.

“This is a perfect example of what people can do when they get together and decide they’re going to change things. This award belongs to everyone. Everyone who put their hands in it,” said Freedom School co-principal Rodney Deas of Bedford-Stuyvesent, Brooklyn.

The students and staff will receive their award on September 21st, 2013, the U.N.’s International Day of Peace.
