NO MORE OVERHEATED SCHOOL BUSES! (info en espanol abajo)
Why should our children have to suffer on bus routes that are hotter and longer than they have to be? Are they less important than the tourists and the working people who ride city buses and trains? Doesn't the mayor cool his limousine with our tax dollars?
Aside from the 6 situations we described in the letter that got sent out last week, there are 2 new stories of children, driver and matron being stuck for 4+ hours waiting for a replacement bus when a minor accident occurred. NO AIR CONDITIONING during that time and SURPRISE! it was a Lorinda bus...
All the more reason to join a parent and student picket line against the outrageous conditions on the Lorinda, Little Richie, etc. buses, many of which park in this one yard.
PLACE: 97-14 Atlantic Avenue in Ozone Park, Queens 11416
DATE: Monday AUGUST 5
TIME: 4:00 to 5:30 pm
Medium walk from Rockaway Boulevard A train.
We realize this time is tricky especially for single parents who have to be waiting for the bus itself. That is the same problem with early in the morning. Maybe at some point, people can choose a date and have an all-day picket line there...? Suggestions are welcome.
Meanwhile those who can make it will do our best to be noticed by the people in the front office and anyone driving or passing by.
Even though summer school ends next week, the hot weather is liable to continue till October.
The city code about cooling buses for students with disabilities is not being enforced, and there is no such code for general education buses.
Parents to Improve School Transportation has committed to doing everything we can to get some attention paid to this issue.
