     Charging “De-Zoning = False Choice,”

CEC Members Unite to Vote Down DoE Proposal

*Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 11:30 am, DOE HQ, 52 Chambers St.*

New York, NY- The Department of Education (DOE) has shared its’ ideas for elementary de-zoning with various Community Education Councils (CECs) around the City.  The DOE is misdirecting our parents and not giving them enough time to think about the effects of de-zoning our school system. The DOE needs to present evidence, analysis and alternatives in this decision-making process.  Your District! Your Choice!

While most parents, who seek an alternative to their neighborhood schools, are successful in getting a spot, the limited un-zoned schools do not have enough seats to accommodate all students who wish to attend. We have to work together to create more choice schools that will always be open to EVERY CHILD in each district. De-zoning is not necessary in order to create new zoned, un-zoned, or charter schools.

Later that day at 6:30pm, Councilmember Jackson, along with New York Communities for Change, New Yorkers for Great Public Schools (NYC-GPS), and the Mirabal Sisters Cultural & Community Center, will host a public forum to discuss elementary school de-zoning at Community Health Academy of the Heights (located 504 West 158th Street).

WHO:  Councilmember Robert Jackson, Members of the City Council, New Yorkers for Greater Public Schools, New York Communities for Change, Parents & Advocates

WHAT: Councilmember Jackson and advocates are calling out the Department of Education (DOE) to halt their de-zoning process of the public school system. Our Community Education Councils need time to truly understand this issue and the effects of approving the DOE’s proposal to eliminate school zones.

WHEN: Tuesday, June 11th, 2013 at 11:30 am.

WHERE: Steps of Tweed Courthouse, 52 Chambers St, New York, NY 10007.
