One-Man March Joins With Child Care Employees Marching to Receive Millions in Delayed Back Pay from Bloomberg Administration
NEW YORK, NY ----- The One-Man March movement has invited child care employees distressed by the Bloomberg Administration’s deliberate decision to withhold between $10-15 million in back vacation pay from nearly 4,000 employees to join him in front of City Hall and march to the headquarters of the Administration of Childrens’ Services at 150 William Street.
“It has been a tremendous hardship for employees who have worked and dedicated their careers to early childhood education to suffer by the City’s refusal to pay these employees in a timely fashion, particularly the more than 1,200 employees who were terminated due to the deficient policies of Bloomberg’s Early Learn scheme,” said George.
George was referring to the administration-implemented Early Learn program which administration officials said would “transform” the nation’s most comprehensive public center-based day care and Head Start system in the nation in October 2012.
In reality, thousands fewer children are served; thousands fewer children are eligible due to discriminatory neighborhood policies that screen out once-eligible families living near the wealthy and scores of dedicated centers and employees ousted by an inconsistent request for proposal process that allowed organizations with little or no early childhood education experience to open child care centers.
Employees are disturbed by the administration’s lack of planning to pay employees in a timely fashion and an ACS memorandum that emerged from July 2012 threatening not to pay employees their back vacation pay if their non-profit employers owed money to the City of New York.
