      Italian Madrigals and Hebrew Psalms

      by Salamone Rossi Ebreo (c.1570-c.1630)

      Sunday, November 4, 2012

      3pm Lecture 4pm Concert

      The Stephen Wise Free Synagogue

      30 West 68th Street

Please join us for our upcoming concert of the wonderful Hebrew and Italian music of Salamone Rossi Ebreo.

Salamone Rossi Ebreo was a violinist and composer at the court of Mantua. At a time when Jews were required to distinguish themselves from the Gentile community by wearing a yellow badge on their hats, Rossi was exempted from this decree by his employers, Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga and Duchess Isabella d'Este Gonzaga, for whom he worked at the palace by day, returning to the nearby Jewish ghetto at night.

This program presents a selection of Rossi’s Italian Madrigal settings of some of the greatest poets of the day (Guarini, Marino, Rinaldi), his dance-like Canzonettes with lighthearted, amorous lyrics, and some of his Jewish Psalm settings. Written for special services at synagogues in Mantua and possibly in Venice and Florence , these Psalms are finely crafted works in the late Renaissance/Early Baroque musical style, elegantly employed to serve the original Hebrew. The program includes a pre-concert lecture by Francesco Spagnolo, PhD, Curator of the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art & Life at the University of California , Berkeley , and a host for RAI Radiotre in Rome .
