Former Green Presidential Nominee Challenges Atlanta Congressman Lewis vote to fund Obama's War Against Libya at Odds with his own words
"At a time when the American people have been asked to tighten their belts, teachers are receiving pink slips, the vital statistics of the American people reveal a healthcare crisis in the making, and the U.S. government is in serious threat of default, our President and Congress have decided that a new war, this time against the people of Libya, is appropriate," said Cynthia McKinney at a press conference held Wednesday in front of the offices of Congressman John Lewis (D-GA). A former Georgia Congresswoman who in 2008 led the Green Party ticket as its Presidential nominee, McKinney recently returned from Tripoli , Libya , where she led a fact finding mission.
Speakers at this event called for an end to funding for the illegal war on Libya, and that this nation cooperate with the African Union (AU) to expedite the establishment of a 'union government of Africa' to promote, protect and empower Africa and African people in the world.
A public forum in being planned now for Saturday, July 23rd, 6:00 pm at the Shrine of the Black Madonna in Atlanta 's West End . McKinney and others with the Dignity Delegation will report back on their experiences under the bombs being dropped as a part of the UN "humanitarian intervention." Already the fact finding mission has documented their observations with narrative, audio and video reports (see link below).
"When civilians are targeted in war, or 'low kinetic' activities, crimes are committed," said McKinney . "NATO practices in Libya are exactly like Israel's practices in Gaza . . . a naval blockade allows arms to flow to NATO's Libyan allies, but stops food, fuel, and medicine from entering non-NATO ally-held areas." Besides McKinney , a range of speakers including Minister Akbar Muhammad, Joe Beasley, Sobukwe Shukura, Minister P.D. Menelik Harris and for the Georgia Green Party, Press Secretary Bruce Dixon addressed the event on the historical context and the ongoing media distortions related to Obama's war against the people of Libya .
Congressman Lewis met with the Dignity Delegation where he heard McKinney 's eyewitness accounts. "We wanted to know why Congressman Lewis voted against authorizing the attack on Libya , yet voted in favor of continued funding of the war," said Richard Searcy, recently named the Chairman of the DeKalb County Green Party. "We were encouraged by Lewis' words that he would not support 'another dime' toward funding this war."
"The Congressman must go further, though," said Bruce Dixon, Press Secretary for the Georgia Green Party. "Obama calling it a humanitarian intervention does not make it so. If Lewis is a man of peace, he has a responsibility to stand up to this nation's war crimes, and to call out the President, not only when it is politically convenient, but especially when his own political party is responsible."
Participants represented the Nation of Islam, RainbowPush Coalition, Africa Ascension, World African Diaspora Union (WADU), All African Peoples Revolutionary Party (AAPRP), the Religious Heritage of the African World Pan African Ministers, the African Community Centers, UNIA/ACL, African Association of Georgia, the New Black Panther Party, The Dignity Delegation, Concerned Black Clergy of Atlanta, Sankofa Church and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Greens from three counties joined these other community activists at Wednesday's event.
