  • At 0730, adult male, at east side feeders & in adjacent vegetation. Anyone is welcome in the yard, gate's open, careful with street traffic while parking on Hewitt or Terra Vista. Gary

  • This afternoon, a small flock of about 10 Evebeaks arrived at our west side feeder. If the gate's open stroll on in (2310 Hewitt), Gary

  • This afternoon (~1240) I found a singing Least Bell's Vireo, along the rogue trail that runs along the west edge of the flat adjacent to the bluff edge and parallel to the Hammond Trail (best accessed from the Vista Point). The bird was found in scrubby coyote brush, cascara, red alder, between a substantial Eucalyptus grove on the north and scattered young Sitka spruce to the...

  • Back for it's 13th year (Humboldt longevity record?), the dark phase Harlan's Red-tail was at it's usual location this afternoon (Bayside Cut-off/SH 101), hanging out on overhead wires. Every time this bird returns and every time I see this bird, I think fondly of Rick Stallcup ('Great Curassow'). What heart-felt, effervescent joy he shared with so many birders. He also found a...

  • Yesterday, Lauren & I saw the continuing landfall of Red Phalaropes at Clam Beach. Scattered birds were at the mouth of Strawberry Creek, flying along the surf line and in isolated ponds associated with higher water in lower Strawberry Creek. At the same time we were on Clam (just north of Strawberry Creek mouth), there was a washed up Pygmy Sperm Whale ( Kogia breviceps...

  • This morning/afternoon, while shadowing Lauren as she swam I walked the Stone Lagoon spit. On the first pass & enjoyed seeing a scattering of Red Phalaropes at the extreme south end of the spit (~12). After getting water & a nutrition snack to Lauren at the breach point, I returned back up the spit to pick Lauren up at the Stone Lagoon boat ramp along Hwy 101. After picking up...

  • Today (11/09/16), Lauren & I saw a Burrowing Owl on the Big Lagoon spit. It was hanging in large driftwood about 2.5 miles north of the County Park beach access. Also today, we had a 'red' Fox Sparrow at our Hewitt Road feeder. There is a possibility this is a returning bird from last year. And on 11/08/16, Lauren located a Clark's Grebe foraging in the lower Mad River...

  • Lauren & I relocated the returning (5th year?) Burrowing Owl at Clam Beach this morning. The bird was roosting on the large riprap boulders above the beach & below the Hammond Trail as it passes just north of the Hwy 101 Vista Point. It was screened by adjacent willow branches & not readily apparent when viewed from the trail. We saw it from the top of riprap on an access trail...

  • Some observations from the WFO field trips I led, plus other odds & ends: 9/29-WFO Patrick's Point S.P., College Cove, Trinidad field trip: The Thursday trip to Patrick's Point was a living experience of Gary Bloomfield's 2016 WFO convention t-shirt design, as the group enjoyed up to 10 Gray Jays, near the Wedding Rock trail-head, sallying through windows above the ocean between...
