Bay Area newgrass jam band Hot Buttered Rum has been described as a rock band playing bluegrass instruments (the band members themselves call what they do "high altitude California bluegrass"), and with musical influences ranging from blues, rock, and jazz to Celtic and old-time string band music from the Appalachians, the group could almost be termed bluegrass fusion.

The bands three songwriters Aaron Redner, Nat Keefe and Erik Yates spin tales about the good times, the bad times, and the roads in between, and belt them from the heart in three-part harmony. Bryan Hornes athletic standup bass and Lucas Carltons tasteful percussion combine with the acoustic instruments to create what is Californias own acoustic music.

The music appeals to traditional bluegrass aficionados as well as the most discerning folk audiences and dance-hungry jam-band fans. They deliver a fresh sound grounded in tradition. ~The Mangy Moose

[Hot Buttered Rum] will butter your ears up with some sweet, sentimental singing, then flatten them back against your head with a scorching fiddle tune. Jazz, reggae, 80's pop - anything's game for this quintet, but they keep coming back to the well of folk and bluegrass to ground their sounds. ~Home Grown Music
