        David's first "real crummy" mandolin was a Kay, bought for only $16 in New York. Ask him about it when you see him at The Jazz Alley.

         

        David worked out Woody's Rag from a Weavers record. The mandolin was so alien to Grisman that he'd worked out the tune all on a single string. I think it was Ralph Rinzler who eventually showed him how to use some of the other strings.
