As many of you may know, Ellie Hakanson and I ran the kid's show and jam at
Wintergrass this year. I was really nervous, not knowing how it would turn
out, and trying to live up to everyone's expectations set by Chick Rose's
excellent standards. But it went really well; we filled the stage with kids,
and the chairs with people, and the time with music. Thanks so much to
Martin Stevens, Garrett Doran, and Holly Boyer for backing kids up, and
thanks to Sharon Sandgren for being emcee!
There was plenty of time to jam and catch shows. Of course, Psychograss was
awesome (in the literal sense of the word), but I think the Mike Marshall
and Hamilton de Holanda duo played the best show(s) all weekend. The Duhks
were even better this time than last summer on Delta Airlines radio, though
I don't know how Tania does so much jumping around and still manage to hit
all the notes. Bluegrass, Etc with Byron Berline was a good show (I like
that "Bapticostal" song that they do) Shawn Camp was a cool new band, even
if he did write country hits, and Joe Craven is spectacular.
The only disappointing band was (sorry guys, don't shoot me) the Del McCoury
Band. I saw a little bit of their church set, so that I could see what all
the fuss was about, and so that I could say that I'd seen Del, but the few
songs (and an odd, rather terse "encore") that I heard weren't all that
impressive. Great Northern Planes, you guys' version of "Get Down On Your
Knees and Pray" was spectacular, better than Del's.
Met many new people, jammed with lots of people I don't usually jam with
(Ellie and I tried a "10 minutes apart" experience.) and enjoyed myself
immensely, partially thanks to the hospitality food. Good stuff.
