Bomb squad technicians exploded a small plastic container found outside
a Modesto elementary school Thursday. The blast revealed the contents: toy
Authorities said the container might have been part of a
high-tech scavenger hunt.
Lakewood Elementary School officials called police about 12:30 p.m. after a
janitor found the container under a tree, said Jim Pfaff, associate
superintendent for Modesto City Schools.
Lakewood is just north of Scenic Drive in east Modesto.
Pfaff said authorities moved the school's 510 students to a safe distance
on the opposite side of the campus, and classes continued while the police
Sgt. David Chamberlain said the container had been wrapped with
olive-colored duct tape and had what looked like military markings.
Police called in the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department bomb squad, and
it detonated the container about 2:30 p.m. on campus.
School administrators believe the container was part of a scavenger hunt
involving the use of global positioning system devices. In some of those games,
coordinates are posted on the Internet to guide players.
Investigators said they are trying to determine who placed the container
near the school.
