Oh, I see. Sorry I didn't understand what you meant. The point of it all is
to use labels (the LABEL element) for form elements, not the id per se. You
know, when the word associated with a form element is clickable and you can
click the word as well as the input box to give it focus? That's done with
LABEL. One way to use it is shown at the WCAG page and it links to the full
      details in the spec.

      > My pages don't validate anyway because I don't have my style sheets

Two things. CSE isn't a validator, even if it calls itself that, and it 's
known to flag false errors. So check in a real validator before you start
      tearing your hair out. ;-)
For example, their online validator implies there are 20 errors in w3c's
      front page.
      <http://online.htmlvalidator.com/php/onlinevallite.php?url=http://w3c.org>
As one would expect, there really aren't any errors at all.
      <http://www.htmlhelp.com/cgi-bin/validate.cgi?url=http://w3c.org>

Do you try to comply to Web Accessibility Guidelines? Because that's what
the label warning/error is about. It's not needed for valid HTML. Labels
are useful though, and one sort of expects to be able to click the text
next to an input, so there are reasons to use them.

Don't trust CSE? Or at least use it in combination with real validators. If
you don't have any special reasons not to, I think it's safe today to serve
old browsers totally unstyled pages, "raw" HTML. If you go this way, you
have to hide the stylesheet from those old browsers that support CSS
poorly, so they don't get a totally messed up page. The most common way is
      the import hack.
      <http://css-discuss.incutio.com/?page=ImportHack>
I wouldn't bother with using a simple style sheet at all. Then you need
only the one imported style sheet.

You may need these URLs too. :-)

I went to the "Validate Markup" page and put in my web URL and this is the
        message I got:

"Sorry, I am unable to validate this document because on line 87 it
contained one or more bytes that I cannot interpret as utf-8 (in other
words, the bytes found are not valid values in the specified Character
Encoding). Please check both the content of the file and the character
        encoding indication."

I don't understand this. It is like Greek to me. I am a really new
webmaster and this is all too much for me to understand.

Then I went to the WDG HTML Validator page and put in my web URL and I got
so many errors I just closed the browser. One of the errors was that it
"found an end tag for <head> but <head> was never opened." I had my <head>
tag in place so I don't know why I got this error.

I closed the browse once again. I give up.
Thank you for all your help anyway!

errors which confuse the validator(s). To resolve the problem I'll
make a temporary duplicate of the page, then strip out everything
except the absolute bare minimum code (e.g. only have a single word
like TEST in the body section). Validate that basic code, and if it
passes, insert more code, validating each time you do. Little by
little that should gradually expose each error which you can then correct.

Another approach that usually works for me: use Tidy to check the code.
Tidy will throw up a long list of problems. Go back to the original
file (NOT the "corrected" one Tidy generated) and look for the first few
errors Tidy listed. Try to understand what went wrong and fix it
(sometimes it's a recurring error that you made a bunch of times
throughout the file, but that you can fix with a Search & Replace).
            Rinse and repeat.

Oh... why shouldn't you just let Tidy fix the file? Well, Tidy is not
that smart. Sometimes its "fix" is worse than what you started with.
Sometimes it will even mess up the formatting. It is fine for *finding*
errors, it will deliver an easy-to-understand HTML file, and it does a
couple things that are really tiresome to do by hand, like converting
between different text encodings or between HTML and XHTML. But broken
code will confuse it. A lot.

It can happen for instance if you use XHTML syntax in a HTML document, e.g.
<meta /> The validator is like an oracle. Take some time to get used to.
The error it reports isn't always the error you made, but the consequence
                of it.

                >I closed the browse once again. I give up.

Nah, don't give up. We can help you sort it out, but then you'd have to
show us the page. Those error pages can look scary, but mostly it isn't as
bad as it seems at first look. The same error repeated over and over, or
one error causing many reported errors that will go away once you correct
the one that is the root of them all.

Anyway, I think you can safely ignore the "error" SCE gave you. As I said,
using labels is a good idea, but the missing id is not a formal error.
Especially if you don't use labels. What would you want with the id then?

I haven't followed this thread from the start so I'm not sure what all
problems you are referring to Kerry, however I ran the code you just
posted through CSE HTML Validator Pro 7 and after fixing the line
break errors that were likely inserted by yahoo when you pasted it,
there's only one actual error. In the HEAD section there is no
opening <script> tag for the ending </script> tag.

There are also quite a number of depreciation warning messages due to
your lack of using CSS, but that shouldn't affect the appearance of
                    the test file.

If you remove the </script> tag from the head section and then try to
validate it, what errors do you see?

                    John

Thank you for your time. I just think all my CSS might be wrong. I am just
learning CSS. And someone said I have some wrong code for the declarations
                      tag I used.

Yes,. you are using XHTML syntax in a HTML document. Nuke that closing
slash and all others if there are any. No <br /> and <img />! That slash
has another meaning in HTML and causes all sorts of errors. Once you have
gotten rid of the XHTML slashes you will get more understandable errors
                        from the validator.

Where are you validating this Kerry? When I take your code posted a
couple messages back and run it through the CSE HTML Pro Validator it
finds no serious errors (as I mentioned before) but a number of
depreciation messages. When I run that exact same page through the
                          validator at:

                          http://www.w3schools.com/site/site_validate.asp

It finds just one error involving your use of the BGPROPERTIES
attribute in the body tag, and even then in spite of the ominous
message, it's not a serious error.

And when I run your code through the free HTML Validator at:

                          http://onlinewebcheck.com/

It finds no serious errors either. Lotta is right in that you should
remove the XHTML tags as you're not declaring an XHTML document, but
                          it still validates.

To sum it up I see two things that need to be straightened out in your
                          code example from message #5468.

                          1. Fix the line breaks that yahoo probably inserted in the middle of
strings. For example something like this:

                          <meta name="description" content="These amazing
                          health products">

                          is bad whereas

                          <meta name="description" content="These amazing health products">

is ok. Again, your original code may not have those line breaks but
                          they're there in yahoo.

                          2. Get rid of the closing </script> tag in the head section.

The only other thing I can think of is I'm only validating your HTML
code example, not your style sheet. For what it's worth I validate my
HTML separately from my CSS anyway.

                          John

                            John,
I am using the WDG HTML Validator at
                            http://www.htmlhelp.com/tools/validator/
That is where I got the report I copied and pasted into the e-mail. I
validated the entire page and not just the TEST code. My page does not have
the line breaks -- yes, I think they were created by the e-mail client when
I sent in the e-mail, but they are not present on my page.
I ran my CSS file through http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ and it
                            passed!

Thank you! When I set up the ICRA labeling on my website, they sent me
the code to insert into my page. I changed it (removed the slash) and then
tested the link to see if it worked the same and it did!! Thanks! I will
run the validator again with this change.

                                Marcelo,
Yes, thank you! I used to have Tidy but when I changed computers I
couldn't get it working again. I went through all sorts of e-mails trying
to get the file back to where it should be but I could never get it to
recognize the file. So I have been doing with out Tidy. Thank you for your
answer. If I had Tidy I would try it this way.
When I lost Tidy I wasn't overly concerned because I ran into problems
with it like you say -- sometimes it would scramble my page!
Then one day I decided it would be a good thing to have and tried to get
it back and it was futile.

                                  Tidy official page:
                                  http://tidy.sourceforge.net/
                                  Latest Windows build:
                                  http://dev.int64.org/tidy.html

Usually it's enough to just place the tidy.exe file in the same folder
                                  as Notetab.

You MAY, however, have to add a line to the [Options] section in the
notetab.ini (or notepro.ini if you are using the Pro version) file in
                                  the format:

                                  TidyExe=C:\Program Files\Notetab Lite\tidy.exe

You can't edit directly the notetab.ini file with Notetab itself, by the
way. You can use a different editor, or save it with a different name
and manually replace it; but the easiest way by far is just to save the
altered file as !notetab.ini (yes, that's an exclamation mark in the
beginning), close Notetab and reopen it. Notetab will find the changed
file and replace the old one with it automatically.

You may also wish to create/fiddle with the tidy.cfg file. It should be
                                  in the Notetab folder.

Oh, another interesting option to be checked is Igor Podlubny's free
offline validator. It's small, reasonably fast, integrates well with
Notetab, and can be found here:

Thank you, Marcelo. No, it wasn t enough just to put the tidy.exe file in the same folder as NoteTab. I will try to add that line of code to the .ini file
