I agree with Wayne that the new calculation in Ntb 7.01 is an improvement. But I also agree that it might "lead to some unexpected results". For example,...
> line 1.2*3=3.6 (Wayne)
comes to 36 on my system caused by German Windows region setting.
Consequently, we have to pay much more attention to the formatting of numbers.
Also, I'm afraid we'll have some trouble with old clips containing ^$Calc$. And, possibly, we'll see some misunderstandings caused by different Windows region settings when exchanging clips in this Clip Group.
Though I made a lot of tests with ^$Calc$ during NT 7.01 betatest, I'm still learning. So I created the following clip. Maybe you'll find it helpful to find out how Ntb 7.01 is processing different formattings on your system.
It deliberately contains some mistakes in order to see their effect for example, dot and comma in different order.
I'm still playing around with that clip and even more examples. Please let us know if you encounter more issues worth mentioning.

Also, after scrolling my screen, the cursor was HERE but the delete key was deleting text THERE.
I didn't test any farther than interactive only, but I'm sorry to say it's not good.

grouping symbol is a dot. It's the exact opposite from the US format.

http://www.fookes.com/ Hi Joy,
It works fine in NoteTab Pro, but there does seem to be a problem in
NoteTab Light/Std. Sorry about that. However, the old method of
selecting the expression first works just the same as in previous versions.

government agencies) who hail Bill Gates and Microsoft as arbiters over
spelling and not authoritative dictionaries and official industry
standards. The digit grouping symbol in Germany is the space and nothing
but the space, anything alse is WRONG.
Eric, you have the new variables ^%DECIMAL_SYMB% and ^%THOUSAND_SYMB%.
If you were to make those writeable and storeable in setup, just preset
with the Windows values, every user would be able to set Calc up
correctly for their own usage.
For myself I've set all my machines up with an English user interface
and international number standards for a long time. I learnt programming
long before I owned my first own computer so that nothing else seems
natural. I've always seen localisation as eminently silly. Menu entries
are NOT natural language. If you ask normal users claiming to understand
their programs what the terms mean, you'll draw nothing but blanks.
These are technical terms for computing and have to be learnt anyway, so
what's the disadvantage in learning the correct and common term in the
first place instead of some pseudoGerman noone understands?

Good idea with the test calc clip. Since I would be doing this for myself anyway, I took the liberty of adding to your idea.
Also, the syntax specifies the final option be in quotes so I corrected that just in case.
Here is the modified clip and results for my system in the US.
Very interesting and a lot to "watch out" for.

The US is one of the most backward countries in the world in terms of weights and measures. There are arbitrary rules
that defy logic. There are only three countries in the world that are not all metric: Myanmar, Liberia, and the US.
(Although some countries still retain remnants of the old, such as pints in Britain.) The US uses an outdated system
brought to the Colonies, then called the 'Imperial' system. But the Brits evolved that to a new version, which the US
did not adopt. That's why there are imperial gallons and US gallons. (Those are the 'old' Imperial gallons.) Yet it is
commonly thought that the US uses the 'Imperial' system. Not true. The US uses the 'US Customary Units' designation to
separate it from the Imperial system, which itself has been abandoned. Most of the professions in the US use the metric
system, while most of the consumer oriented 'stuff' is US Customary. We've crashed satellites due to this issue.
That's the long way of saying that if the number has 4 numbers, you don't add the comma, but if it has 5 or more, you
do. Go figure. The longer the number, the more characters it takes, due to the addition of the commas. (1000=4,
10,000=6) Sigh. I write code that deals with international measurements every day, and find that even the meaning of a
cup is different in different countries. You virtually have to know what country is involved to get any semblance of
accuracy.
Why can't we just all get on the same page?

http://www.fookes.com/ Hi Joy,
Could you explain why there would be a lot to "watch out" for?
For NoteTabbers in the US and many other countries where a dot
represents a decimal symbol, there will be no noticeable difference from
earlier versions of NoteTab.
The only risk is that someone from a different region designs a Clip
based on his own local instead of using features that make it work
reliably anywhere in the world.

Germany (which else?) and just not bother to fiddle with individual
details. (How many change defaults at all?). Second they may want the
German standard for Word, Excel (Did you know, that contrary to any
decent spreadsheet by any decent software vendor Excel can't read it's
own files, when written by someone with different Windows (not Excel!)
settings?) but treat Clips more like a programming language, of which,
thank G'd, none was ever localised.
I expect most German Clips users here to have their Windows set up
German and I hope they'll continue to write their clips the comman
standard standard international way to make sharing possible.

Since you had [007] that said [none] I thought you were testing with unsupported characters () just to see what would happen. I frequently do that since (long reason deleted) it's good to know. And I was getting crosseyed. I wanted some decent test cases but didn't want to spend TOO much time...
As for the calc(50,000.00/1;2) case, I believe I covered that in... ah, I didn't, did I? Yes, I have to add cases specifying number of decimals but not the last option as well as some others I haven't taken the time to think of yet. It takes a lot of thought and planning to create a really good test. Writing tests for compilers was one of my first jobs.
Thank you for the compliment. People find the time to do what they like and this is the stuff I like. Besides, there are many others who have contributed much more than I and I figure it's the least I can do to return the favor.
Joy Certainly, Eric. Some of the results from my test were surprising and unintuitive to me and probably others. Especially those who are not great in math and/or who have not had much experience programming.
^$Calc(11000/1)$ gives 11,000 and ^$Calc(11,000/1;2;",")$ gives 11,00
^$Calc(11,000.22/1;0;" ")$ gives an error while ^$Calc(11,000.22/1;2;" ,")$ gives 11,000 22
I'm not at my PC so can't yet redo my test by adding cases where the 3rd param is completely omitted so don't know what those will do.
I see now that it seems the 3rd parameter is not only used for output... it is also used to validate and interpret the number (probably all the numbers???) passed to the function. But that makes the 4th example above surprising since the decimal char is passed as a space which is used correctly in the output, but not when validating 11,000.22 like in the 3rd example.
I'm sure I'd see the patterns if I thought long and hard enough and performed many more tests but that's my point... it's not intuitive and, unless someone uses the calc function very often and gets used to it's quirks, there IS a lot to watch out for.
FWIW, I would make some changes in the way it currently works and at the VERY least, provide a lot more documentation to explain EXACTLY how it works in ALL cases but that is, of course, your business. The best thing I can do is create a detailed test program as I've started doing to help me figure out how it works.
I'm also a little concerned that old clips that do not use the 3rd parameter will now return results containing the thousands symbol which may cause problems when that result is fed into the next calculation. But perhaps not I have to test some more.
No offense meant ever. NoteTab is fantastic and I'd be lost without it.

numerical symbols. In this case, when a number exceeds 9999, it adds a
digit grouping symbol (a comma in the US). If you don't want numbers
formatted with digit grouping symbols, use this:
^$Calc(11,000/1;^%DECIMAL_SYMB%)$ or ^$Calc(11,000/1;".")$
The double quotes are not necessary, but they make the code clearer.
> and ^$Calc(11,000/1;2;",")$ gives 11,00
In this case, you are telling NoteTab that the decimal symbol is a
comma. So "11,000" is equivalent to "11.000" in the US. You would only
do this if you plan to send your Clips to users wanting a comma as
decimal symbol.
An alternative way to write it, if you intend to share internationally,
is like this:
^$Calc(11^%THOUSAND_SYMB%000/1;2)$
> ^$Calc(11,000.22/1;0;" ")$ gives an error while
Using a space as a symbol will produce unreliable results. The only
> ^$Calc(11,000.22/1;2;" ,")$ gives 11,000 22
valid decimal symbols I know of are a dot or a comma (though there may
be some others). I don't think a space is used anywhere as a decimal
symbol, so why use that?

Invalid symbol characters (like a space decimal symbol or other weird
choices) will produce unexpected results. But why would anyone want to
do that? it defeats the purpose of the parameter.

Don't we have to remember the calculation of date value integers in this context?
I had to edit clips executing something like this...
^!Set %OldDateValue%=^$GetDateToInt(1.8.2012;d.m.yyyy)$
^!Set %NewDateValue%=^$Calc(^%OldDateValue%+10)$
^!Info New date value is ^%NewDateValue%
^!Info New date is = ^$GetDateFromInt(^%NewDateValue%;d.m.yyyy)$
^$GetDateFromInt$ can't calculate a date value integer like '41.132'. For me, it works fine when changing line #2 to...
^!Set %NewDateValue%=^$Calc(^%OldDateValue%+10;.)$
Maybe some "old hands" will be interested to find out that you changed ^!Inc and ^!Dec too (not mentioned in the WhatsNew.txt). So far, theses commands couldn't deal with a number like '41.132' but now it works fine. The value is returned as a plain integer without dot.
^!Inc and ^!Dec can even deal with numbers in exponential notation now:
^!Set %x%=3e2
^!Info ^%x%=^$Calc(^%x%)$
^!Inc %x%
^!Info New x=^%x%

I'm continuing this discussion not for arguing, but for trying to help and pointing out some things.
First, for anyone who has written clips that output numeric reports (as I have) will find the large numbers have grouping commas whereas they did not before. This WILL break clips that are picky about output format and/or output data for input into other programs and routines. I'm sure it's a very small percentage, but still...
Next, I just ran a clip that adds numbers and produces a report. NONE of my calc functions have any parameters and all the individual numbers and totals are in the range of 0 to 9999 at this time. I was surprised and mystified to see some numbers output with a comma and others without even though all the numbers are treated the same way.
Example:
Jan 3324.90 708.30 no commas
Feb 2046.50 296.35 no commas
Mar 1722.25 3320.73 no commas
Apr 344.50 955.67
Tot 8,591.90 6637.12 comma and no comma
(Totals incorrect because I changed the numbers)
I still feel there are many clips out there that will be affected for one reason or another. People are very creative and write clips to do all KINDS of things you'd never expect. I feel the best solution is to NOT have grouping by default.
Finally, for now, I created a much better and more detailed calc test clip for myself and, it may help others. I checked carefully for mistakes, but this is the type of code that makes it easy to miss things.

"Cup" is ambiguous from the start. It's what you drink from, and there is no rule fixing the size of your morning coffee container.
My morning coffee comes in a 12 oz cup, filled from an "8 cup" machine, which fills about 3.5 of my cups. Perhaps the coffe machine comes from China, like everything else (has anyone ever wondered where this trend will end?). Perhaps the Chinese farmers, who specified the 8 cups used ceremonial tea cups?
What's this got to do with NoteTab clips? or this thread?

I too don't see the advantage. So far I haven't hit any snags or
disadvantages for myself either, so I'll keep out of it, but it does
seem a violation of KISS.

I suppose there are some mistakes in this version of your test.
In [2915] to [2980], you intend to output 1 decimal but, actually, you are calculating with 0 decimals:

From [3015] to [3080] it's 2 decimals vs 0 in ^$Calc$:

Thanks!
