I use Firefox too but this answer has me "foxed".
I cannot find "Accounts" under tools, nor in "options". I find some tab
controls under "Advanced" but nothing to place the tabs at the bottom. The
nearest I could get to "Accounts" is "Connection Settings", but there is
nothing remotely connected with tabs in there. What's going on? I am running
1.0 and it says there are no updates available.

Welcome to the more secure family! I have not seen tabs at the bottom.
But it is there as a option under tools -> accounts -> tab browsing
-> features to put them at the bottom.
There are other options in there. You may also want to try one or two of
the tab broswer extensions as they do all sorts of neat things.
