      The following is a "Very basic" description of the Modern Human Readable
      Text Generating/Manipulating Application types.




      FWIW, Per the following descriptions:


      Notepad is a Plain Text Screen Editor

      Wordpad is a Rich Field Text Screen Editor

      NoteTab Pro is a Plain Text/HTML Screen Editor

      ClipWriter is a Program Language Specific Screen Editor

      Adobe PageMaker is a Desk Top Publisher

      MS Word is a Modern Word Processor

      WordPerfect is a Modern Word Processor

      WordStar is an Obsolete Word Processor

      Side Note:
      During the period from the mid 1970's to the mid 1980's MicroPro WordStar
      ruled. WordStar was the first word processing program that was produced for
      microcomputers. Hence the reason many users are familiar with the WordStar
      Shortcut key sequences and some applications still incorporate and or
      emulate the WordStar sequences. Present day software still converts
      WordStar and other obsolete document file formats to modern word processors
      (Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, etc.).







      Line Editor:

      Usage -

      Pretty much obsolete now but was originally for viewing or changing data
      in a parameter file (.prm, .ini, .dat, .cfg, etc.), one line at a time

      Features -

      Displays single line of text

      No diacritics

      Supports uppercase only

      No CR/LF capability

      No printing capability

      Limited search capability




      Screen Editor:

      Usage - Viewing or changing text one screen/page at a time (a screen/page
      can have varied length)


      Types of Screen Editors:


      1. Plain Text

      Usage -

      Viewing and changing text in parameter files (.prm, .ini, .dat, .cfg, etc.)

      Composing "Plain Text" e-mail

      Generating ASCII text files (writing program source code)

      Features - (may vary depending on author's bias)

      Displays one screenfull at a time

      No diacritics

      Supports upper and lower case

      Supports Tabs and indentation

      May support bullets

      CR/LF support

      Basic printing

      Search and Replace

      Text Blocking

      Line justification


      2. Rich Field Text

      Usage -

      Same as Plain Text Editor plus:

      Basic Composition of multipage documents

      Features - (may vary depending on author's bias)

      Same as Plain Text Editor plus:

      Multipage documents

      Basic Diacritics ( Bold, Italics, Underscore, Color)


      3. Program Language Specific

      Usage -

      Same as Rich Field Text Editor plus:

      Composition of Program Language Specific Source Code

      Features - (may vary depending on author's bias)

      Same as Rich Field Text Editor plus:

      Program Language specific commands and formatting


      4. Desk Top Publishing

      Usage -
