      That means that the 'getty' program or maybe the 'login' which it invokes is
      exiting immediately. The way it used to work (ok, this information is 20
      years old...) getty puts up the 'login' prompt then does a read from the
      console, then invokes 'login' with the result (subsequent reads are done by
      login).

      If getty fails on the read it exits and init respawns it. If this happens
      too often init disables that line for a while (on the basis that someone has
      pulled the Teletype serial cable out of the machine, perhaps to change the
      ribbon ;-)

      Anyway, there is a problem reading from the serial line - disable the getty
      (in /etc/inittab) and try read/write directly to /dev/ttyS0
