Power mgmt w/ slug & ext USB disks, Drivestation maybe ?
- After picking up what I thought was a very good deal on the Buffalo
Linkstation with 160GB HDD, I found out I bought a Buffalo
Drivestation. Still for $80 after the two rebates from Buffalo
Technologies ($160 w/ free s/h from Outpost.com), it is a nicely
housed and decently priced external USB2 hard disk. Too bad it's
preformatted as a single 160GB FAT32 partition !
Good match to the slug, now one feature that I haven't been able to
activate is the power management while the slug is on. apmd as
compiled into most x86 Linux kernels supports ATA drive sleep modes.
Is there a low level utility outside of apmd to put ATA HDDs to
Now the Drivestation if set to AUTO power mode with rear switch will
power down when the attached slug is powered down. But there is a
Windoze only utility that comes with the Drivestation to allow
setting a power down timer for the HDD.
If this timer is set, then Drivestation is unmounted from Windoze
and mounted to the slug, HDD never sleeps as with Windoze.
? Anyone tried to get this low power mode working with a slug ?
? Any utilities available for these USB external HDDs that are not
just vendor specific ?
