      # echo $PATH
      /opt/bin:/opt/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:

Do you get that as well? If not, set the path. If you do get it, try

      # ls -l /opt/bin/man
      -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 49856 Feb 1 2005 /opt/bin/man

If you don't get that, I have no clue.

        Thanks for the response Inge,

        Here are my results:
        # echo $PATH
        /sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
        # path=/opt/bin:/opt/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbi
        # man
man: No such file or directory
        # ls -l /opt/bin/man
        -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 49840 Sep 2 13:0
        # echo $path
        /opt/bin:/opt/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:
        #

My path wasn't as it should have been but changing it hasn't changed
        the symptoms.

Looks like we are both still puzzled.

        Thanks, John.

Eh... note that "path" and "PATH" are distinct variables. E.g:

          # path=/bin

          /opt/bin:/opt/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:
          # echo $path
          /bin
