I've used an Arduino to monitor my home security system. When the Arduino detects an alarm, it sends a serial output via usb to a linux server which then texts me on my phone. The only software required on the linux system besides bash is the mutt command line email client. Not sure if Optware supports mutt but Debian does. Anyway, the code, part list and schematics are here:  http://turriebuntu.wordpress.com/other-stuff/text-a-cell-number-if-my-dsc-pc1550-home-security-system-alarmsdraft/

      Hi,

I've been playing around with the security system at home, and my slug
      is sitting un-used.
I have a 12v logic signal out when the alarm is activated, low normal,
      high when activated.
Is there any way I could use this to cause the NSLU2 to trigger an
      event, like send an email.
Is there any serial port that could be monitored ?, the 12v would be
dropped down to the required level 3.3V probably, Both the USB ports
would need to be used, as running a CAT5 line from the router is
awkward, so preferred coms would be WiFi
I could , worst case use the alarm signal to turn power on to the
NSLU2, but then its a case of making sure its booted up and the network
is connected before the require action is done, like send an email.
The software for sending an email shouldn't be a problem as I've done
this with a Pogoplug. just the hardware implementation and reading the
      port .

      Any ideas appreciated
      Thanks
