One of our employees made a technological breakthrough that is the basis of the fee-for-service program we are initiating. We would like to have him benefit directly from this breakthrough by receiving a “royalty” of some percent of the contracts we get that are based on his breakthrough as long as he stays with the organization.
1. Has anyone ever paid someone like this in a nonprofit enterprise?
2. If so, what is a reasonable percentage? We are expecting contracts to be in the $5-$10k range.
3. Does anyone require their staff who have access to essentially trade secrets sign a non-compete clause?
