Síðan hlutuðu þeir og hlaut Geir goði að fara með sökina.
Then they cast lots and it fell to Geir Priest to go (proceed)
      with the case/suit

Litlu síðar riðu þeir vestan yfir ár og komu þar sem fundurinn hafði verið
      við Rangá
A little later they rode from the west over the rivers and came to where the fight
had taken place by the Rang river

og grófu upp líkamina og nefndu votta að benjum.
and dug up the bodies and named witnesses for the death blows (as  in a coroner's jury)

      Síðan lýstu þeir
og kvöddu níu búa um málið.
Afterwards they announced their findings and summoned nine to prepare for the case (MM&HP - a Jury)

Þeim var sagt að Gunnar var heima við þrjá tigu
manna. Spurði þá Geir goði hvort Gissur vildi að ríða við hundrað manna.
To them it was said/told Gunnar was at home with thirty men (?his house carls), then asked Geir Priest whether Gizur wished to ride with 100/120 men (CV)
      I don't like their math.

"Eigi vil eg það," segir hann, "þó að mikill sé liðsmunur."
"I do not want that" says he "because great would be the difference"(G)
Riðu þeir þá aftur heim. Málatilbúnaður spurðist um öll héruð og var sú
orðræða á að róstumikið mundi verða þingið.
Then they rode back home.  The preparation for the suit/case was heard of all over the district and the discussion/rumour was that Thing would become rowdy

      56. kafli

Skafti hét maður. Hann var Þóroddsson. Móðir Þórodds var Þórvör. Hún var
dóttir Þormóðar skafta, Óleifssonar breiðs, Ölvissonar barnakarls.
A man was named Skafti he was Þorod's Son, Þorod's Mother was Þorvor she was (the) daughter of Þormod skafta (the) son of Olaf the Broad, son of Olvi - Child-sparer
Skafti (would this be from Skafa - Shave - was he head-Shaven well he would not have shaved his beard if he had one)

      Þeir voru
höfðingjar miklir feðgar og lögmenn miklir. Þóroddur þótti nokkuð grályndur
og slægur. Þeir veittu Gissuri hvíta að hverju máli.
They were, father and son both great Chieftains and great Lawmen. Þorod was thought to be somewhat spiteful (Z) and sly. They assisted Gizur the Wite in every case.

Þeir Hlíðverjar og Rangæingar fjölmenntu mjög til þings.
They from Hlið and Rang River made a great crowd at Thing.

      Var Gunnar svo
vinsæll að allir sammæltust á það að fylgja honum. Koma þeir nú allir til
      þings og tjalda búðir sínar.
Gunnar was so popular that everyone assembled there to help him. They all come now to Thing and pitched their tents (Z)

Í sambandi með Gissuri hvíta voru þessir höfðingjar: Skafti og Þóroddur,
Ásgrímur Elliða-Grímsson, Oddur frá Kiðjabergi, Halldór Örnólfsson.
In company with Gizur the White were these chieftains, Skafti and Þorod, Asgrim Elliða-Grim's Son, Odd from Kid-Mountain, Halldor Arnolf's Son

Nú ganga menn til Lögbergs einnhvern dag.
Now  men go to Law Rock one certain day

Stóð þá upp Geir goði og lýsti
vígsök á hendur Gunnari um víg Otkels.
Then stood up Geir Priest and declared a manslaughter suit at Gunnar's hands for the killing of Otkel

Annarri vígsök lýsti hann á hendur
Gunnari um víg Hallbjarnar hvíta, þá um víg Auðólfs, þá um víg Skammkels.
Another manslaughter suit he declared at the hands of Gunnar for the killing of  Hallbjorn the White, then for  killing of Auðolf, then for  killing of Skammkel.

      Þá
lýsti hann vígsök á hendur Kolskeggi um víg Hallkells.
Then he declared a manslaughter suit at Kolskegg's hands for the slaying of
      Hallkel

      Og þá er hann hafði
lýst öllum vígsökunum var það talað að honum hefði vel mælst. Hann spurði að
þingfesti og að heimilisfangi. Gengu menn síðan frá Lögbergi.
And then he had declared all of the suits it was said (?discussed) that is had been spoken well by him. He enquired (formally for Thing) of the Thing Community and Domicile (of the defendants)
Men went then away from Law Rock

Olvir - at the start of this chapter is called "Child-Sparer" was this very extraordinary to do this - to withhold from killing a child - one may presume that it was the custom to kill a man's children when you killed him, for they might grow up to take revenge on you for their Father.
I wonder if this is the Same Olvir whose sword was now in Gunnar's hands - as Olvi's gift.

Any help - advice - critique welcome
      Patricia
