Þá mælti bæjarmaðurinn: "Hver er þessi maður?"
Then the townsman spoke, “Who is this man?”

      Kjartan sagði nafn sitt.
      Kjartan said his name.

Bæjarmaður mælti: "Þú ert sundfær vel eða ertu að öðrum íþróttum jafn vel
      búinn sem að þessi?"
(The) townsman spoke, “You are a very good swimmer and are you equally adept
      at other skills as this.”

Kjartan svarar og heldur seint: "Það var orð á þá er eg var á Íslandi að þar
færu aðrar eftir. En nú er lítils um þessa vert."
Kjartan answers and rather slowly, “It was (the) word then when I was in
Iceland that there others went behind (me?). But now this is worth little.”

Bæjarmaður mælti: "Það skiptir nokkuru við hvern þú hefir átt eða hví spyrð
      þú mig engis?"
(The) townsman spoke, “It matters some with whom you have had (a contest?)
or why do you not ask me anything?”

Kjartan mælti: "Ekki hirði eg um nafn þitt."
Kjartan spoke, “I don’t care about your name.”

Bæjarmaður segir: "Bæði er að þú ert gervilegur maður enda lætur þú
      allstórlega. En eigi því
(The) townsman says, “You are both an accomplished man and behave very
      haughtily. But none the less

síður skaltu vita nafn mitt eða við hvern þú hefir sundið þreytt. Hér er
      Ólafur konungur
you shall know my name or with whom you have contended at swimming. Here is
      King Olaf

      Tryggvason."
      Tryggvi’s son.”

Kjartan svarar engu og snýr þegar í brott skikkjulaus. Hann var í
      skarlatskyrtli rauðum.
Kjartan does not reply and turns away at once, coatless. He was in a red
      scarlet-kyrtle.
(we had learned previously that scarlet was a type of fabric rather than a
      color)

Konungur var þá mjög klæddur. Hann kallar á Kjartan og bað hann eigi svo
      skjótt fara. Kjartan
(The ) king was then very well dressed. He calls to Kjartan and bade him
      not to go so quickly.

víkur aftur og heldur seint. Þá tekur konungur af herðum sér skikkju góða og
      gaf Kjartani, kvað
Kjartan turns back and rather slowly. Then (the) king takes from his
shoulders a good cloak and gave (it) to Kjartan, said

hann eigi skikkjulausan skyldu ganga til sinna manna. Kjartan þakkar konungi
      gjöfina og gengur
he should not go coatless to his men. Kjartan thanks the king for the gift
      and goes

til sinna manna og sýnir þeim skikkjuna. Ekki létu hans menn vel yfir þessu,
      þótti Kjartan mjög
to his men and shows them the cloak. His men were not pleased with this.
      (They) thought Kjartan

hafa gengið á konungs vald. Og er nú kyrrt.
to have gone much under (the) king’s power. And now (it) is quiet.

Veðráttu gerði harða um haustið. Voru frost mikil og kuldar. Heiðnir menn
      segja það eigi
The state of the weather was hard during the fall. There was much frost and
cold. Heathen men say it not

undarlegt að veðrátta léti illa: "Geldur að nýbreytni konungs og þessa hins
nýja siðar er goðin hafa reiðst."
surprising that the weather was bad, “It is punishment (Z) for the kings
innovation and this the new faith which has angered the gods.”

Íslendingar voru allir saman um veturinn í bænum. Var Kjartan mjög fyrir
      þeim. Veðrátta batnar
The Icelanders were all together during the winter in (the) town. Kjartan
was very much before them. The weather improved

og komu menn fjölmennt þá til bæjarins að orðsending Ólafs konungs. Margir
      menn höfðu við
and people came in great crowds then to the town at a message from King
      Olaf. Many men had

kristni tekið í Þrándheimi en hinir voru þó miklu fleiri er í móti voru.
accepted Christianity in Trondheim and they were still many more who were
      against (it).

Einnhvern dag átti konungur þing í bænum út á Eyrum og talaði trú fyrir
      mönnum, langt erindi
One certain day (the) king had an assembly in the town out at Eyrar and
spoke of the faith before people, a long

og snjallt. Þrændir höfðu her manns og buðu konungi bardaga í mót. Konungur
      kvað þá vita
and eloquent errand. Trondheimers had men? here and offered (boda?) to
fight against the king. (The) king said they should know

skyldu að hann þóttist átt hafa við meira ofurefli en berjast þar við
      þorpara í Þrándheimi. Skaut
that he thought himself to have had (dealt with) a more overwhelming force
than to fight there with peasants in Trondheim.

þá bóndum skelk í bringu og lögðu allt á konungs vald og var margt fólk þá
skírt. En síðan var slitið þinginu.
(The) farmers were seized with fear (Z) and gave up all to the king’s power
and many folk then were cleansed. And afterwards the Thing was dissolved.
