      KNITTING ALONG THE VIKING TRAIL

Swedish Knitter, Elsebeth Lavold to visit Seattle

The Nordic Heritage Museum and Madrona Fiber Arts are thrilled to
announce their sponsorship of the visit of Elsebeth Lavold , Sweden
's premier knitwear designer, artist and instructor, to Seattle ,
February 6-15, 2009. Through meticulous study of patterns of
ornamentation of Scandinavian craftsmen of the Iron Age, including the
Viking era, Elsebeth Lavold has adapted them to extraordinarily
beautiful stitch patterns and exquisite hand-knitted garments. Patterns
for many of these designs are in her book "Viking Patterns for
Knitting", published by Trafalgar Square Publishing in 2000. She
has worked with hand-knit design for more than 20 years and is the
author of a number of books containing her designs for hand-knitters.

During her visit to Seattle , Elsebeth Lavold will be opening an
exhibition of her Viking designs at the Nordic Heritage Museum in
Seattle 's Ballard neighborhood which will run from February 6 to
April 5, 2009. In this exhibit, the intricate stitch patterns drawn
from a thousand years ago and brought to new life in exquisite garments
of unique knitwear will be displayed. You can also see where the
inspiration comes from, in the many Viking age objects that are shown in
the form of photos, drawings and replicas, ranging in size from minute
pieces of jewelry to huge rock carvings.

      CLASSES TO BE OFFERED

While in Seattle , Elsebeth Lavold will be offering classes for knitters
in the design and hand-knitting techniques used to make these unique
garments at both the Nordic Heritage Museum and The Madrona Fiber Arts
      Winter Retreat.

Classes at the Museum will be held during the opening of the exhibition
February 6-8, 2009. The Madrona Fiber Arts Winter Retreat will be held
February 12-15, 2009 at the Hotel Murano in Tacoma , Washington . In
addition to teaching classes at the Madrona Winter Retreat, Elsebeth
Lavold will also be the guest speaker at the Saturday evening banquet
bringing to life her research and design inspiration which spans a
millennium with her unique contemporary knitwear.

Announcement of all classes will occur in October with registration
opening in November. More information will be available on the websites
      of both organizations.
