"Takkin' your makkin'"- Fair Isle Knitting from Shetland with Elizabeth
and Martha Owen
May 21-23, 9 a.m. - 12 noon & 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Fair Isle, located in Shetland, Scotland, lies in the North Sea due west
Bergen and has strong cultural ties with Norway. This Scottish island
birds, wind, sheep and a well-known knitting style.
Fair Isle knitting involves carrying only two colors per row but this
combination can range from bright to subtle. Pattern repeats are
from their Nordic, Turkish and South American cousins. This traditional
style originally used a knitting `sheath' and very long double-pointed
needles. This helped Shetland knitters earn a reputation as the fastest
in the world.
This class will cover all aspects of Fair Isle knitting from planning to
finishing with Shetlander Elizabeth Johnston and John C. Campbell Folk
Resident Artist Martha Owen. For more details or registration please
