Well, rumor in the department is Fire Season starts May 18th up here
for TGU and SHU areas. Once that starts, seasonals go on duty and Red
Bluff City loses many firefighters. I just got my structure and
      wildland turnouts. :) :)

            Hello All,

I just got back from the Statewide ECC meeting in Riverside and heard
            some interesting information.

USFS: is at 100% of MEL (Maximum Effective Level) This is the first
time this has ever happened and they did not think they would ever
see it. Look for new helos, tankers, engines, and crews you have
            never heard before.

CDF: Yeah, they declared fire season on Monday, but they also went to
100% staffing. This has never happened before. usually it's late June
to early July before they go 100% This includes all the aircraft, yes
we are hearing them and they are there. Forget the schedule of
            openings they are open now.

Fire Behavior: We are seeing fire behavior similar to that of July
and August in May. Many high altitude fires in areas that normally
would have snow right now. Also seeing fires burning "green fuel."

Fire outlook: The Great Basin (the area between the Rockies and the
Sierra Nevadas) are in worse shape now than this time last year, and
we all remember what happened last year. So Cal is bad, Nor Cal is
worse. Look for big fires in No Cal this year, especially in
Lassen/Modoc/S.Oregon also known as Jefferson Country. Very bad
            drought conditions up there.

Everyone (Fire Agencies) are ready and expecting the worst. They are
jumping on all fires with lots of equipment. There are a lot of new
people in new positions, safety is a major concern. The hope is with
all the resources most fires can be kept small. We are ready, we'll
            see what happens.

              I agree Tim

Santa Clara unit had a small grass fire turn into a three
alarm nightmare they lost 3 large out buildings a barn and a house in
a very short period of time, late this afternoon ,But Hollister still
has no tankers they have been running coptor 406 and 106R to just
about anything along with air attack 460 but they can not get bomber
support even when requested, there is a strange thing here also
because of the size of the urban interface (is that what they call
it?) there has been a red flag warning all week and
there are two or three b engines from the san Diego unit all the way up here!!!

I realize that all the tanker bases are not "really"
open, however the order to open them has been issued.
I should have been clearer in my original post. The
problem they are having is they were not ready and all
the maintenance and pilots are not quite ready.

Unfortunately in the fire service this is really more of a constant
problem of, just because the guy with the all the bugles say's "Make It So!"
in his best Picard voice, doesn't always mean its either feasible or possible
                  at times.
In this case, with the early start to fire season, many schedules have
been altered and staffing of certain things has been (to many standards)
moved up on an unprecedented time table. While human personnel can tolerate
this and be flexible, machines aren't quite as accommodating. The latest
update we've been given is that while the orders may have been cut for
everything to be at full song, air tankers and contract helo's may still
follow previous timelines due like you said, maintenance and such.
The key point though is the fact that the orders have been issued, and
where possible, things are being staffed and made ready. If you're area
doesn't have its tankers and such yet, keep an eye out, you now know that
they've been ordered and could come any day now.

                  Mike
