Real Men Cook® to Launch "The Art of Food"
at 20th Annual Philadelphia International Art Expo
Real Men Cook®, the national Father's Day charity event, has continued
to make a splash in Philadelphia since first being presented in the City of
Brotherly Love in 2000. However, with the upcoming launch of "The Art
of Food" and other activities that have either taken place or are in the
planning stages this year, 2005 is destined to go down as the year that
the event and its associated charitable arm, Real Men Charities, truly
begin to make their mark year-round in the Delaware Valley.
As the centerpiece of signing on as a sponsor of October Gallery's
20th Annual Philadelphia International Art Expo taking place at The
Liacouras Center from Friday November 11-Sunday, 13, 2005, Real
Men Cook® will present 'The Art of Food." This initiative will consist
      of the following components:
+ Kids in attendance at the Expo throughout the weekend will get the
opportunity to participate in the making of a food theme mural
+ Book signings with K. Kofi Moyo, Real Men Cook co-founder and
author of "Real Men Cook: Rites, Rituals & Recipes for Living," from
4-5 PM on Saturday, November 12 and 2-3 PM on November 13 as
part of the Black Issues Book Review Author's Corner
+ Designated pieces of art (some with a food theme) will be auctioned
off to benefit Real Men Charities between 3-4 PM on Saturday,
November 12; Kofi Moyo will be the celebrity auctioneer
+ Real Men Cook event cooks will serve samples of their favorite
dishes during the weekend to invited guests in the VIP hospitality suite
Since its creation in 1989, Real Men Cook has demonstrated a
commitment to portraying the African American family (and other
communities of color) in a favorable light by focusing on the positive
involvement and responsibility of the male, particularly on Father's
Day. In 2001, Real Men Charities, Inc. was founded as a year-round
extension of Real Men Cook. Quite simply, Real Men Charities is
focused on helping to create and sustain healthy families, with an
      emphasis on men.
The Art of Food is but one of many activities under the Real Men
Cook/Real Men Charities banner in the Delaware Valley so far this
year. A list of activities and accomplishments reads as follows:
      • Two locally based charities, the Barbara C. Peek Scholarship Fund
and the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation, each received $1,000 from the
proceeds of this year's Father's Day event.
      • Real Men Cook/Real Men Charities teamed with Kappa Alpha Psi
Fraternity and Dignity Housing for a Men's Health Roundtable during
National Men's Health Week (June 13-19).
      • Real Men Cook/Real Men Charities teamed with Kappa Alpha Psi
Fraternity to serve samples of healthy dishes, distribute health and
nutrition info, and conduct blood pressure screenings at the "Take A
Loved One to the Doctor Day" activities at the West Philly YMCA.
      • Real Men Cook volunteers contributed funds to help support Ira
Wilson, a longtime Real Men Cook (Philly) event participant, Sysco
Food Services executive and New Orleans native who is now
supporting and housing 18 family members displaced by Hurricane
The Art of Food is destined to add to the stature and diversity of both
the 20th Annual Philadelphia International Art Expo and the Real Men
Cook crusade.  The Art Expo is a legendary annual event of popular
African American art like no other. It offers unique and unequaled
opportunities to compare artistic talent and to engage in "the art of the
deal."  While participation in the food mural is open to all children in
attendance at the Expo, written permission will be required at the
mural registration area by a parent, guardian or group leader (for
student and youth groups in attendance).  Admission to the Expo
      itself is free of charge.
