- Real Men Cook® to Launch "The Art of Food"at 20th Annual Philadelphia International Art ExpoReal Men Cook®, the national Father's Day charity event, has continuedto make a splash in Philadelphia since first being presented in the City ofBrotherly Love in 2000. However, with the upcoming launch of "The Artof Food" and other activities that have either taken place or are in theplanning stages this year, 2005 is destined to go down as the year thatthe event and its associated charitable arm, Real Men Charities, trulybegin to make their mark year-round in the Delaware Valley.As the centerpiece of signing on as a sponsor of October Gallery's20th Annual Philadelphia International Art Expo taking place at TheLiacouras Center from Friday November 11-Sunday, 13, 2005, RealMen Cook® will present 'The Art of Food." This initiative will consistof the following components:+ Kids in attendance at the Expo throughout the weekend will get theopportunity to participate in the making of a food theme mural+ Book signings with K. Kofi Moyo, Real Men Cook co-founder andauthor of "Real Men Cook: Rites, Rituals & Recipes for Living," from4-5 PM on Saturday, November 12 and 2-3 PM on November 13 aspart of the Black Issues Book Review Author's Corner+ Designated pieces of art (some with a food theme) will be auctionedoff to benefit Real Men Charities between 3-4 PM on Saturday,November 12; Kofi Moyo will be the celebrity auctioneer+ Real Men Cook event cooks will serve samples of their favoritedishes during the weekend to invited guests in the VIP hospitality suitecommitment to portraying the African American family (and othercommunities of color) in a favorable light by focusing on the positiveinvolvement and responsibility of the male, particularly on Father'sDay. In 2001, Real Men Charities, Inc. was founded as a year-roundextension of Real Men Cook. Quite simply, Real Men Charities isfocused on helping to create and sustain healthy families, with anemphasis on men.The Art of Food is but one of many activities under the Real MenCook/Real Men Charities banner in the Delaware Valley so far thisyear. A list of activities and accomplishments reads as follows:• Two locally based charities, the Barbara C. Peek Scholarship Fundand the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation, each received $1,000 from theproceeds of this year's Father's Day event.• Real Men Cook/Real Men Charities teamed with Kappa Alpha PsiFraternity and Dignity Housing for a Men's Health Roundtable duringNational Men's Health Week (June 13-19).• Real Men Cook/Real Men Charities teamed with Kappa Alpha PsiFraternity to serve samples of healthy dishes, distribute health andnutrition info, and conduct blood pressure screenings at the "Take ALoved One to the Doctor Day" activities at the West Philly YMCA.• Real Men Cook volunteers contributed funds to help support IraWilson, a longtime Real Men Cook (Philly) event participant, SyscoFood Services executive and New Orleans native who is nowsupporting and housing 18 family members displaced by HurricaneKatrina.The Art of Food is destined to add to the stature and diversity of boththe 20th Annual Philadelphia International Art Expo and the Real MenCook crusade. The Art Expo is a legendary annual event of popularAfrican American art like no other. It offers unique and unequaledopportunities to compare artistic talent and to engage in "the art of thedeal." While participation in the food mural is open to all children inattendance at the Expo, written permission will be required at themural registration area by a parent, guardian or group leader (forstudent and youth groups in attendance).
